Ode to a Traffic Cone
Oh noble cone, knight fluorescent. Rooted, proud and irridescent Soldier, friend, stalwart defender, Stood firm betwixt chaos and fender. Your pedestal, foursquare foundation. Beacon bold stood at your station. The wizard’s hat sent to protect. Calm, aloof and circumspect. A cone, a clone, in columns prudent. The holy grail of drunken student. So we salute you pointy friend, our angel to the journey’s end. Magnificent, little band of brothers. No thought for self, only others. So much more than shimmering plastic, you are the one true light fantastic.

My Life as a Traffic Cone
Today my world is a traffic cone.
While inside, I am at ease.
The muted color lulls me and I can only hear the wind as cars race by
my pointed sanctuary.
These days though, I live life outside the cone-
for I’m much too big to fit.
The orange screams at me: CAUTION!
Now I’m shaken awake,
well alarmed-that the world is transversed by maneuvering.
And it is I who swerves between the line of hot orange cones
as alive as hissing snakes.
It is I who must know now,
when to obey and when to bare my hatchet.
And while I’ve come to appreciate beauty more…
I no longer think colors are quite as beautiful.

A Happy Traffic Cone
I’m a happy traffic cone
And I am standing all alone
Because all the orange traffic cones
Decided to go home.
The drivers do not like them
Because drivers hate to stop.
Sometimes they run cones over
And then they get caught by cops.
But I’m different because I’m yellow,
The bright kind like the sun,
And I’m better than a stoplight
Because I’m the only one.
I like to smile as cars go by
But I keep getting ignored
Because people think that safety
Is all that I am for.
I could be a giant party hat
But I would need a giant head.
If I was not made of plastic
I could be an ice cream cone instead.
Maybe if I was a circle
I could bounce and roll like balls.
Maybe people would like me more
And I could give my hugs to all.
But alas I am a triangle
…only not, I’m something else.
I’m an awesome happy traffic cone
And I can stand all by myself!
So I’ll keep on shining and stopping cars.
I have my own horn to toot.
I’d like to think that traffic honks
Because they think I’m so damn cute!
